experts say domestic violence is an epidemic in this state and there needs to be more focus on treating the abusers. >> what is going on in the abusers' mind, many times they were abused and have seen violence in their lifetime and what is going on there. that is one way we can make a difference in domestic violence. >> reporter: according the the maricopa attorney's office, one-third of homicide victims who were murdered within the first month of getting the orders. when a person files a protection order, there is no law that requires the defendant to turn in their weapons voluntarily. reporting live, i'm nicole garcia, fox 10 news. an apartment fire in tempe leaves five people leaving for a place to sleep tonight.
